Awards for All – National Lottery

Brief Description
A small grants programme that aims to help improve local communities and the lives of people most in need.

Region Specific?
There are separate schemes for England, Scotland, Wales, and NI.

How much is available?
£10,000 (except Wales where max is £5,000)

What is the money for/not for?
Any UK community or voluntary organisation. Company ltd by Guarantee is OK to apply, so are Charities and CIC’s. You cannot apply if you are a profit making organisation, or an individual or a sole trader.
Money can be used for equipment, IT costs, small refurbishment or landscaping projects, materials, publicity, sessional workers, volunteer expenses.
Money cannot be used for salaries, rent or day to day running costs, existing activities or regular events, fundraising, loans/interest payments, political or religious activity, routine repairs/maintenance, used vehicles.

What is the application process?
Fill out a fairly short application form, NCWRP has a part filled template available.

Timescales
Open for applications on a rolling basis. You can access the funds from about 3 months after application, you will be told within 30 days if your application has been successful (except NI where it could be 3 months).

Community Foundations

Brief Description
Community foundations use their local expertise to ensure that money invested in local organisations makes the lasting difference donors want and expect.

How much is available?
Various grants and funding.

What is the application process?
See website for available grants in the local area, distributes funding from Comic and Sport Relief, First Share and others.

Applications are accepted between April and January with the application process taking approximately six weeks.

Fair Share Trust

Brief Description
Fair Share Trust is different to other funding programmes because we work with communities and involve them in decision making. We’re trying something new so there’s bound to be learning which could benefit others in future. It aims to build capacity, increase social capital and improve ‘liveability’ within Fair Share Trust areas.

Fair Share Trust areas are UK wide (East Midlands, East of England, London, North East, North West, Northern Ireland, Scotland, South West, Wales, West Midlands, Yorkshire and Humberside).

The Links Foundation

Brief Description
Working Links is a unique organisation that delivers services to tackle social exclusion and poverty by helping disadvantaged individuals and communities.

How much is available?
Not specified.

What is the money for/not for?
To benefit communities throughout the UK by providing, or assisting, in the provision of facilities or services necessary to improve their conditions of life. This will be achieved by supporting projects which meet the following criteria:

  • Advancing people’s education
  • Reducing significant disadvantage
  • Assisting those in conditions of poverty, need or distress

Providing for recreational or other leisure time occupation

Tudor Trust

Brief Description
Tudor aims to support work which addresses the social, emotional and financial needs of people at the margins of our society. We are interested in how organisations tackle these needs, and their root causes. We want to encourage growth, progression and development, not just keeping things as they are.

UK wide

How much is available?
No maximum, but average of c. £50k

What is the money for/not for?
Tudor makes grants towards: Core funding (including salaries and running).
Will not fund organisations focusing primarily on adult learning, skills training or employment training.

What is the application process?
2 stage process. Stage 1 involves telling them your answers to the following questions, on no more than two sides of A4:

  • What difference do you want to make, and how will your organisation achieve this?
  • Why are you the right people to do this work?
  • Tell us about the people you are working with, and how you know there is a need for your work.

UnLtd – Millennium Commission

Brief Description
UnLtd’s mission is to unleash the energies of social entrepreneurs, people who can transform the world in which they live.
Level 1 awards are aimed at individuals or informal groups of people who have an idea which will change society for the better.

Awards are given out on a regional basis.
Regions are: London, The South and the East of England, North of England, The East and West Midlands, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland

How much is available?
Level 1 £500-£5000

What is the money for/not for?
To help with the running costs of the project, for the things you need to start or develop your project, materials, equipment, renting rooms for meetings etc.

What is the application process?
You must apply for Level 1 first, complete an online eligibility questionnaire. Then contact the local office to get an application form. If they like the application, they will invite you for an interview, after which they will make the award.

Timescales
No deadlines. Awards are granted every month except August and December, a decision is made within 6-8 weeks of receipt of application.

Yorkshire and Clydesdale Bank Foundation Grant

Brief Description
The Foundation was established in July 2008 to provide support to registered charities, not-for-profit organisations, community and other voluntary organisations. In terms of financial support four key areas of focus have been selected at this time;

  • The advancement of environmental protection or improvement
  • The advancement of citizenship through initiatives that support and promote volunteering
  • The advancement of community development through initiatives that build and strengthen the communities in which we operate.

Region Specific?
Activities should take place inside the bank’s Beneficial Area (areas covered by branches of the Bank, Financial Solutions Centres, and HQ locations).

How much is available?
Amount is discretionary, no maximum stated.

What is the money for/not for?
For expenses, not salaries.

Reaching Communities Programme (England), Big Lottery Fund

Brief Description
Reaching Communities funds projects that help people and communities who are most in need, and can really make a difference. Projects can be new or existing activities, or be the core work of your organisation.
We want to fund projects that respond to needs identified by communities, and those that fund projects that help those most in need including those people or groups who are hard to reach.
Projects are considered where the identified outcomes are achievable and meet the programme outcomes.

£10,000 - £500,000 for up to five years.

What is the application process?
Complete an outline proposal, BLF may also ask for an explanation for the amount of overheads you require, tools for this are on the website along with a walkthrough of the application process.

Climate Challenge Fund

Brief Description
The CCF aims to empower communities to take action to reduce their carbon footprint and make a real difference to the local and national environment.

Region Specific?
Scotland

How much is available?
Up to £1million.

What is the money for/not for?

  • Fund grant can be paid against feasibility studies and project management of power generation projects, but cannot pay for the purchase of equipment or the installation costs associated with equipment
  • The fund can support community organisations to develop carbon emissions reduction action plans and will pay for costs associated with feasibility studies or community engagement for carbon reducing projects and action plans.

It will pay for the costs of a community establishing a partnership, setting up a company or project management costs related to the community carbon emissions reduction project or action plan.

Stage 2 – a discussion with a member of the CCF team
Stage 3 – complete full grant application form
Stage 4 – CCF team review application in preparation of the CCF grant panel meeting
Stage 5 – CCF grant panel meeting approves project funding
Stage 6 – funds awarded and implementation/monitoring phase begins.

Communities First Trust Fund, Wales Council for Voluntary Action

Brief Description
Communities First is designed to enable communities to pursue sustainable development and tackle social disadvantage themselves, through local partnerships. 188 of the most deprived areas in Wales, as identified by the "Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation", have been identified as being eligible to apply for Communities First funding.

Wales, eligible areas are specific by region.

How much is available?
Maximum of £5,000 per project.

What is the money for/not for?
The purpose of the scheme is to support any type of activity that involves local people, through small community organisations, that benefits their community.

Ecological Footprint Grant Scheme

Brief Description
To promote a low footprint Wales through encouraging greater use of ecological foot printing techniques.

Region Specific?
Wales

How much is available?
Up to a maximum of £5,000 per financial year per organisation.

What is the money for/not for?
Grants will be awarded up to a maximum of 75% of the total cost of the project.

The grant scheme has launched in May 2009. There will be a continuous window of application. Applications will be assessed on a “first-come, first-served” basis.

Wales Environment Start-up Grant

Brief Description
The Start-up grant helps with the costs involved with establishing new voluntary or community groups. These may include the hiring of venues, facilities and equipment, purchase of small items of equipment and hand tools, protective clothing, publicity and printing costs, training, insurance and affiliation.

Maximum of £1,000

What is the money for/not for?
In both these instances, grants will only be awarded if the proposed project activities meet with our objectives and it is hoped that any projects benefiting from these grants will later come forward for Environment Wales registration.

What is the application process?
To apply for Environment Wales funding, the Development Officer will be happy to talk through your ideas and to provide the necessary forms and guidance notes. Please allow time for discussion, and perhaps revision, of your application before it is submitted.
No application can be considered until it has been counter-signed by a Development Officer and is received at the Cardiff office along with all requested supporting information. If you’d like to get in touch with a Development Officer to discuss your project, contact the main office.

Timescales
The Advisory Panel has its first meeting in March and then meets every five weeks thereafter. Application is continuous but for an application to be reviewed it must be received at least three weeks in advance of the next Panel meeting. Applicants will be informed of the Panel's decisions usually within 5 working days of the Panel meeting.

Wales Environment Pre-Project Grant

Brief Description
The grant can support a variety of pre-project studies, including feasibility studies, design studies, ecological surveys, community appraisals and business plans.

How much is available?
Maximum of £4,000

What is the money for/not for?
Funding will not be provided for academic studies or theoretical exercises, nor where the proposed study is to be conducted "in-house" i.e. by staff already employed by the applicant organisation. The work must be done by external consultant(s) or specialists.

What is the application process?
To apply for Environment Wales funding, the Development Officer will be happy to talk through your ideas and to provide the necessary forms and guidance notes. Please allow time for discussion, and perhaps revision, of your application before it is submitted.
